Textile Design is the art of creating designs for printed fabric. There are 2 main categories of Textile Design, Apparel and Home Furnishing. This web site is about design for apparel. Every print that you see, from Hawaiian shirts, to mens' ties, to couture evening wear is created first in the artist's studio. It is then printed commercially on bolts of fabric. Until a few years ago all designs were painted on paper or silk using several different mediums such as gouache, dye or acrylic. Today much of the designing is done on computer using applications such as Illustrator and Photoshop. The samples are then printed out on paper or specially treated silk to be displayed for the customer. All of the designs on this web site were creating using Computer Graphics.
Printed textiles have a long history. As early as 3000 B.C. patterned cloth was widely used by primitive people. By 2000 B.C. clothing with stamped patterns was being worn in Egypt. Samples of printed cloth from the 4th and 5th centuries A.D. were found in Greece. And printed cotton from the 13th century was found in Nigeria.
